You were doing fine until to stated that on a 4 wheel drive the front axle would be locked. On the 'econ' 4 wheel drive this is true, but for many years the big three sold full time four wheel drive. Those separate engagement so you could lock the axles if necessary. But you drove around in four wheel drive all the time, but it is not the same as the all wheel drive systems.

What a couple of losers. They slam the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport for it's ground clearance of 8.5" and don't say a word about the Subaru CrossTrek's only having .2" more. Does .2 inches make that much more of a difference? Both have CVT, and yet they only make a negative comment about the Outlander. This was not a review of transmissions, but of snow capability. They can't even stay on topic. And then they throw a couple of dedicated true off road vehicles into the CAR mix!! What the heck? Based on this and their other reviews, they have totally lost all credibility in my opinion.

Albania Albania I have a torque convertor that gives some minimal differential properties. It helps balance the "throttle load" thru the shafts. You are pretty correct tho, there is no real FF differential on production cars. There are, however, advanced stability control systems that assist with or without ABS.

Vor year
pablomax3045
pablomax3045

Around 04:10 you are talking about "locking the hubs" and that this is now making the wheels spin at the same rate. This is not correct. Locking the hubs only allows the spinning axle shaft to apply power to the wheel by engaging the splines. This has totally nothing to do with whether the diff is open or locked. In fact the front diff is almost always open, thus it allows you to go around a corner. Only a small amount of trucks had lock front diffs. The real problem with the older systems was that the transfer box acts as a center locking diff, but the effective gear ratio at the tires was different between the rear and front wheels, thus binding would occur and cause damage to the car.

You rear end someone, minimum1000$ , you get winter tires same$ even these guys could figure that out. You won't need a 4or awd to get out of a ditch if you dont slide in. My Subaru was all over the road before using winter tires. Most importantly TIRES. then choose a drive system suitable for intended conditions.

Vor 7 Monate

Without winter tires AWD / 4WD is worse. All it means is you get going, and probably drive too fast. AWD and 4WD don’t help at all with stopping or turning. You’re not likely to get killed (or kill someone else) getting stuck. But sliding thru a stop sign or into oncoming traffic with bad tires fills up hospitals.

Vor 7 Monate
Wayne S.

andrew christie I go to Tahoe all the time to snowboard. I take my WRX with summer tires but I deflate them to 12psi when I get into bad conditions. I keep it under 35mph and it has no problems going anywhere. I see people in suv's who are stuck...all they need to do is deflate to about half the normal psi.

Winter tyres are very important, I've gone around four wheel drive vehicles in a two wheel drive vehicles on snowy hills simply because I invested in winter tyres, while they are spinning out I'm off on my journey no four wheel drive needed.

Young people can always go for the hidden gem, a second hand Jeep Renegade. Since it has only been produced since 2015, you can find them with low mileage . It was made in both FWD and AWD versions, the AWD versions starts around 17-18k USD. Add in a small lift kit, some proper snowtires, and watch it eat snow. Here's a good example of someone doing just that : http://youtu.be/y3Z7W4C_QuA Yes, you can get a Subaru cheaper, but they also often come with a lot more miles on them. The renegade is a proper hidden gem for people who have to drive in snow, I kid you not. It's even decent on the insurance, surprisingly.

It's not the car, it's the tyres, or tires! Honda CRV 2wd with Winter tyres beats a AWD CRV with summer tyres/tires on ski slope climb. I use Michelin Cross Climate (other all season tyres are available) on my VW Golf. In snow I have passed many Range Rovers stuck on low profile summer sports tyres - so tyres are just as important, if not more important.

By far I prefer a RWD vehicule with 4 good winter tires. If you have the feel of your car there is much less chances to be in trouble with a RWD vehicule than with a FWD , 4wd or AWD vehicules as on a RWD vehicule, front wheels specifically steers the vehicule, on others configutation, as the front wheels start to slip, you loose the control of the vehicule

Please take this as constructive criticism: when you do a top 10, just show the cars and a quick 2-3 sentences on why you believe it belongs on the list. We don't need you to defend your Ph.D dissertation on the differences between AWD and 4WD after each car. Save that for your review videos or comparison videos. Check your YouTube stats for this video compared to your other top 10 videos like your Most Missed cars and Least Missed cars, where you didn't ramble on in between each car.
